The foster care agency Uspiritus hosted a bike parade in downtown Bowling Green to recognize Child Abuse Prevention month. The parade featured an eight-lap ride around Fountain Square Park. However, those wishing to participate were required to bring their own bike. Each lap represented 1000 children currently in foster care. Uspiritus coordinator Sarah Major said, “As of the beginning of this month there were 8,188 children in foster care just in the state of Kentucky.” Road blocks were set in place to prevent traffic from disrupting the parade. Registration for the event began at ten Saturday morning at the Capitol Theater. People of all ages were invited to participate. Long-time foster parent Mary Bridges has adopted two children and currently has a 15-year-old foster daughter. In a recent interview with News Channel 12 Bridges said, “The kids are having fun. They, in the past, haven’t had any fun. It’s always been abuse or something else so it gives them the chance to have fun and be free with people, to show that everybody’s not like what they’re used to.” The bike parade reminded everyone of what it means to be a child.
